In 2010, IMO Member States agreed that the contribution made by seafarers to international trade, the world economy and civil society, should be marked every year with a ‘Day of the Seafarer’ – 25 June.
This year, the IMO is celebrating the campaign online. Everyone is asked to voice their support using our social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Hyves for our Dutch members. On 25 June all are encouraged to say thanks to seafarers via status updates, wall posts, notes, tweets and more.
The aim is to pay tribute to the world’s 1.5 million seafarers for their unique and often overlooked contribution to the well-being of the general public, and the vital role that they play by carrying more than 90% of world trade safely. It is also an opportunity to educate the public about issues facing seafarers today – such as piracy.
