Dynamic Positioning LogbooksA guide to the issuing of IMCA DP logbooks and providing the answers to some frequently asked questions.   While not a qualification, IMCA DP logbooks are often seen as an indicator of a level of training, so steps are taken to ensure they are issued to appropriately trained DP operators or, where issued to other key DP personnel, that this is clearly recorded.Who should use an IMCA logbook?? DP operators holding a DPO certificate from the Nautical Institute or Norwegian Maritime Directorate;? Other personnel, such as engineers, electricians and electronic technicians can also use the logbook, but their role (e.g. ‘DP Engineer’) should be recorded on the inside front page with their name.Trainee DP operators should not normally use this logbook – they should record their training and experience in the (light blue or green) Nautical Institute book which forms part of the certification process.Who can purchase an IMCA DP logbook?? IMCA member companies – who should issue them in accordance with the above procedure;? Individuals with a DP operator certificate from the Nautical Institute or Norwegian Maritime Directorate on provision of a copy of that certificate;? Other individuals who state their role, e.g. ‘DP Engineer’, which will be inscribed in the front of the book prior to issue;? Non-member companies on provision of the individual’s name and either a copy certificate or listed role for each logbook required. How is a logbook issued or registered? Each numbered logbook contains space on the inside front page for recording the holder’s name and who has issued the logbook.  A registration card is also included on which this information should be entered.  IMCA maintains a database of individuals who have registered their logbooks with IMCA.? Where the logbook is  provided by a vessel operator, it should be issued by an appropriate individual who has seen a copy of the qualification and has a supervisory role for DP operators and other DP personnel, such as a vessel master;? Where the logbook is issued direct by IMCA (when sold to an individual or a non-member company), it can still be endorsed by an appropriate person as above or ‘IMCA’ can be entered in this space.Where can I obtain an IMCA logbook?Logbooks are available direct from IMCA.  They may also be held in stock by vessel operators for issue to their staff.Details on obtaining IMCA logbooks and other publications are available from:IMCA Publications, 52 Grosvenor Gardens, London SW1W 0AU, UKTel: +44 (0) 20 7824 5520Fax: +44 (0) 20 7824 5521E-mail: publications@imca-int.comWeb: http://www.imca-int.com/publications
